How to Use YouTube to Generate Sales

YouTube is a lucrative goldmine when it comes to affiliate marketing. You just have to learn how to use it first. Read on for my take on how you can use YouTube to generate sales.

For the last 12 years, I’ve made my living selling products and services online through two main platforms: Google and YouTube.

In this article, I’m going to share with you my personal tactics on how I’ve used YouTube to generate millions of dollars of revenue for my businesses. Hopefully you can use some of these stratagies to use YouTube to generate sales for your business as well.

Why You Should Consider YouTube for Your Business

This is my favorite social media platform and where a majority of my sales have come from.

The main reason I’ve had a lot of success in generating revenue with YouTube is this:

It’s a great way to be discovered by new potential customers.

YouTube has two primary purposes.

One, users want to search for something. Or two, they use it as an entertainment platform.

Either way, YouTube has made it very easy for content creators to get discovered.

If someone is searching for videos, YouTube will show search results from a variety of different creators who have published videos on that search topic.

Or, if someone is viewing a video from a creator they’ve subscribed to, YouTube will show suggested or similar videos.

Without having a base of customers to send to my YouTube channels, I’ve managed to grow my two channels to 73,000 and 35,000.

I’ve also had over 1 million unique viewers for my bigger channel. That’s 1 million people that I can pitch my products to nearly for free considering the time and cost spent to make the videos (which has been minimal for me).

The YouTube Marketing Business Model

Ok, so by now, you probably agree that YouTube is a great way to get whatever you’re selling in front of potential customer’s eyes. But how do you get started and how do you make sales?

My business model has mainly looked like this:

Indicates the video, email list, content, sales process used to generate sales on YouTube.

It’s simple. But it works.

Here’s how it breaks down:

I create videos that rank in YouTube’s search or suggested videos.

Then, within those videos, I invite the viewers to subscribe to my email list in exchange for a free gift. This is often referred to as a “lead magnet.”

From there I send them quality content (more videos, articles, helpful emails) to grow more trust with that person.

And then, I pitch our products within that content and through promotional emails.

That’s the basic model that I and many others have used to make sales through YouTube.

It’s simple, but it works.

The hardest part for most people is to gain traction with a YouTube channel and get views on your videos. So, without further ado, here are some tips on how to increase your chances of gaining views on YouTube.

Tips For Being Successful With YouTube

YouTube Tip #1: Find Out What People Are Searching For

The fastest way for a new YouTube channel to grow subscribers and get viewers is to start ranking in YouTube’s search.

With my Hockey Training business, we provide online training programs for hockey players who want to improve their game.

For our videos, we wanted to attract players or parents looking for hockey training information for their kids.

When we started, I began brainstorming everything I could think of that hockey players might search for. This included things like, “how can I skate faster,” or “hockey speed workout,” or “hockey stick handling drills.”

Once you’ve written down everything you can think of, head over to YouTube. In the search bar type the main keyword for your business. For me, this was “hockey.”

When you search for the term you want to rank for, YouTube will provide you with a number of similar keywords. To go a step further, add a second word.

For example, when I type in “hockey speed” YouTube provides me with the following searches: hockey speed workout, hockey speed training, hockey speed drills, hockey speed drills on ice, hockey speed training for small spaces, etc.

Here’s another example:

Let’s say your business is teaching people how to play chess or how to win at chess. If you type “chess strategy” into the YouTube search bar you will see the following video ideas: chess strategy for beginners, chess strategy opening moves, chess strategy for kids, chess strategy middle game, etc.

If you want even more video ideas, find the most popular channels in your niche and sort their videos by “most popular.” That will give you a good idea of what people are searching for as well.

YouTube Tip #2: Hook Your Audience + Provide Value

Now that you have an abundance of video ideas, you’ll hopefully be able to rank in the YouTube search for the keywords you researched.

The next step is ensuring that your videos keep viewers watching and that they peak interest in your business.

There are two ways you can do this.

The first is to hook your audience at the start. Within the first 3-10 seconds, most people decide whether to keep watching a video or to leave.

The easiest way to hook your audience is to tell them what’s in the video.

For example, if someone is searching for a “hockey speed workout” they are most likely looking for a workout to follow to help them become a faster hockey player. So our video would start with something like “Hey hockey player, in this video I’m going to show you the best hockey speed workout that will have you blowing past other players in your next game!”

You can also add in a further hook to get them interested. I use this:

“And wait until you see the final exercise in the workout. It’s my top-secret speed exercise that I’ve only shared with professional players until this video!”

The second way to keep viewers interested is to make videos that provide value. Videos shouldn’t drag viewers on without giving them something they could find useful or helpful. If you don’t add value via the video, the viewer will feel like you wasted their time.

When creating videos, aim to provide as much value as you can. For my team, we post videos with workouts that are included in our paid programs. We also record Q&A videos answering hockey players’ questions that we might normally charge a couple of hundred dollars in consulting fees for. And we even post full 20+ minute workouts that they can follow along to while they watch.

We don’t hold anything back when we post our videos, as we know that if we can get hockey players and respect the information we provide, there is a good chance they will become a paying customer down the road.

YouTube Tip #3: Video Equipment Matters Less Than You Think

So many people get caught up in not having the proper video equipment for making videos. Or, they’ll want to invest thousands of dollars before getting started. I can tell you from experience that the video equipment doesn’t matter.

As long as your audio is good and your camera isn’t held by a shaky hand, you will be good to go. The content within the video is much more important.

My tips for ensuring good audio is to either purchase an external mic for your camera or phone or to stand close to the phone/camera in a quiet room.

And to avoid shaky video invest in a small tripod or prop your phone on a desk or table so you or someone else doesn’t have to hold it by hand the entire video.

That’s really it. There have been channels that have hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of subscribers that use their phone propped up and just talk into the camera with no added fancy equipment.

YouTube Tip #4: Be Personable And A Good Presenter

This is something I’ve had to work on over the years. I am the type of person that stood at the front of my high school classroom reading off of a paper in a monotone voice without making eye contact with anyone.

My first videos came off the same way too. Looking back they are cringe-worthy. The funny thing is that some of them still do really well because the content within the video is valuable. However, I know that if I were to re-shoot them with more enthusiasm they would be doing even better.

If you are like me and not naturally gifted with presenting, I have three key points for you to remember:

SmileBe enthusiasticKnow what you’re going to be talking about before shooting

Knowing what you’re going to say in the video is critical. Planning ahead makes the shooting process so much easier. Some people like to script out their entire video. Personally I just write down and study some key points that I want to touch on and go from there.

Often times I will finish recording a 5-10 minute video and touch on all of the points I wanted to but I re-shoot to make everything smoother. Sometimes I will have to re-shoot multiple times.

It might take me an hour to shoot a 7-minute video, but I want to make sure it’s as close to perfect as I can get it.

On the other hand, my business partner can nail a 20-minute video perfectly on his first try nearly every time (I wish)!

Whatever route you go, just make sure that you are enthusiastic and have an idea of the direction you want the video to go in.
